APC claims Governor Obaseki is behind a plan to disrupt the Edo poll with mass protests, raising tensions ahead of the election.
Governor Godwin Obaseki has been accused by the Edo State Governorship APC Campaign Council of engineering a shutdown of the state using massive protests that are scheduled to commence on September 15, 2024.
Furthermore, the council alleges that Obaseki is working in partnership with other governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to provoke a nationwide disturbance.
According to a press release by Prince Kassim Afegbua, the council claimed that on September 8th, 2024, during a meeting held at Government House in Benin City, Edo State; Obaseki disclosed this strategy.
The statement claimed that the people involved in Inspector Akor Onu’s murder attended the meeting but have not yet turned themselves over to law enforcement.
Reportedly, the law enforcement operations were hindered by an Assistant Commissioner of Police said to be collaborating with Obaseki’s Chief Security Officer.

According to the APC Campaign Council, seven supporters of APC and three members of PDP were apprehended by the Commander of Inikorogha’s 4th Brigade last week.
The council reported that the PDP members were promptly released, whereas the detention of APC members persisted until their legal team intervened on Sunday.
The statement further alleged that Obaseki supported PDP-led states in their delay of school resumption, as a means to protest against the APC-run Federal Government.
In preparation for the upcoming Edo governorship election in two weeks, the APC Campaign Council has implored security agencies – notably including the Inspector General of Police – to act swiftly and prevent any potential disruption of peace or order.
At the time of writing this report, Commissioner for Communication and Orientation Chris Nehikhare has not yet responded.
