EDO: Police commence probe into kidnapping accusation against officer and traditional ruler

According to the Edo State Police Command, investigations have been opened into claims that one of its officers was involved in a kidnapping that occurred in Uromi, in the state’s Esan North East Local Government Area.

The commissioner revealed this information at a press conference in Benin City, according to Obasanjonews.com. He also mentioned that there are rumours that a traditional ruler is connected to the kidnapping. Adegboye stated that the event led to a Monday protest by the community’s people.

It was said that while trying to abduct a driver and passengers, local hunters and vigilantes engaged a kidnapping group in a gunfight.

During the process, some kidnap suspects managed to flee, while one was slain. Further information revealed that the detained suspect named an Uromi division police officer and a few villagers as his accomplices.

The young people in the area took to the streets after the celebrities were mentioned, demanding that those who were supposedly involved be arrested. Speaking about the incident, the Commissioner of State Police stated that the officer was the subject of a very covert inquiry and that the command was made aware of it.

“We learned of the policeman that the apprehended kidnapper had mentioned.” While I’m speaking with you, a group of young people are demonstrating against the role of local indigenous people—possibly a traditional leader or something else entirely—in kidnapping cases.

“We’re not going to approach it warily. He stated that the matter is being discreetly investigated and that all parties involved will face legal consequences.

He promised that the public will be informed of the police’s findings.
