Preceding the upcoming September 21 governorship election in Edo State, a former deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, has made it clear that he is not aligning himself with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
As reported by Channels TV, Shaibu expressed his stance during the 2024 Father’s Day celebration at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Benin City, emphasizing his preference to support a candidate from his home state.
Shaibu, who faced impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly recently, asserted that the PDP candidate is considered an outsider in the political landscape of the state.
The former deputy governor highlighted that the initial contenders in the governorship race were himself and two other candidates from Edo State, one from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the other from the Labour Party (LP).
Despite the circumstances, Shaibu announced his endorsement of the APC candidate, cautioning against the potential resurgence of godfatherism in Edo State if the PDP candidate were to win the election.
