The Edo gubernatorial election sees a twist as an ex-APC lawmaker resigns from the party. Learn about the implications for the upcoming race.
Emmanuel Agbaje, a former lawmaker who represented Akoko-Edo II from 2015 to 2023 and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has abandoned the party less than three weeks before the September 21st gubernatorial election.
On September 2nd, 2024, Agbaje penned a letter to the Ward 10 chairman in Akoko-Edo local government area. Within it, he expressed dissatisfaction with what he perceived as disconnection and being overlooked within his party’s framework as well as in his own ward.
After consulting with my supporters and leaders, I have arrived at this decision which was not an easy one to make. However, I believe it is the right move for me now.
In a democratic system that emphasizes the ability to make choices, I have every right to reconsider my level of participation and strive for an agreement that acknowledges loyalty, devotion, and personal sacrifices.

It has become impossible for me to abide by the intentional isolation of committed members and leaders who are integral components in our Ward’s political party.
Being a Party founder, it’s not an easy choice to make when considering the close relationships and friendships developed within the organization over time. However, I can assure you that our bond will remain safeguarded even if some of us choose to stay behind. There is more to life than politics.
I wish to express my gratitude for your leadership and backing throughout my tenure in the Party. Our collaborative efforts towards realizing the values of A.P.C have been immeasurable, and I highly appreciate our working relationship. Looking ahead, it is my anticipation that we will continue fostering a strong association that benefits both our people and communities alike.
It was reported that Agbaje, in addition to the 14 members who were not sworn in at the State House of Assembly in 2019, did not join Governor Godwin Obaseki’s move from APC to PDP prior to the 2020 gubernatorial election. This made him the sole remaining APC legislator within their jurisdiction.
