With just under five months remaining until the governorship election in Edo State on September 21, 2024, the Legacy Group faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has voiced its opposition to the appointment of Godwin Omobayo as the new deputy governor of the state.

Led by Dan Orbih, the party’s National Vice Chairman for the South South Zone, the Legacy Group made this demand during a meeting of PDP leaders and stakeholders in Irrua, the administrative headquarters of Esan Central Local Government Area.

Orbih emphasized that reversing Omobayo’s appointment is a crucial condition for the group’s support in the upcoming election.

Orbih further stated that if their concerns are not addressed, the Legacy Group is prepared to work against the PDP during the election.

He argued that Omobayo, who was appointed as deputy governor, was a member of the Labour Party at the time and not affiliated with the PDP.

Orbih called for the appointment to be reversed, emphasizing that the people voted for a PDP member to hold the position of deputy governor.

Orbih also called upon Governor Godwin Obaseki to promptly address the grievances of the PDP Legacy Group if the party wishes to approach the next governorship election as a united front.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the party in Edo State and criticized the performance of the Obaseki-led government, claiming that it had failed to fulfill its campaign promises and neglected the needs of the people.

Orbih’s refusal to join the State PDP Campaign Council was a direct result of his lack of confidence in Obaseki’s ability to garner support for the PDP in the upcoming election.
