A group in Edo State is urging Governor Okpebholo to allocate the positions of Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chief of Staff to Muslims, citing the need for balanced representation in the administration.

As November 12, 2024 approaches for the inauguration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State, a group known as Edo Muslim for Equity and Good Governance (EMEGG) has called for Muslims to be appointed to the roles of Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff.

reports indicate that the group issued their demand through a statement provided to journalists in Benin City.

The declaration, endorsed by the group’s General Coordinator, Sheikh Sirajudeen Muhammad and

Abdullah Umar, the Secretary, highlighted that it was time for Muslims—who make up 40 percent of the state’s population—to be acknowledged for their active participation and contributions during the election.

The group expressed the view that the demand for these two positions arose due to both the Governor-elect and his deputy being of Christian faith.

Sheikh Sirajudeen Muhammad, the group’s General Coordinator, noted that they have consistently advocated for fair representation and their demands have frequently been ignored by past administrations.

Although the positions of Governor and Deputy Governor are currently held by Christian candidates, it is essential for Governor-Elect Senator Monday Okpebholo to fulfill his commitments to inclusivity.

EMEGG is calling for Muslims to be appointed to pivotal roles, notably the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chief of Staff. Having individuals in these crucial positions is essential for fostering a balanced and inclusive government that mirrors Edo State’s diverse religious demographics.

Muslims in Edo are qualified, experienced, dedicated, committed, and loyal supporters of the APC who have made significant contributions to the party’s success.

Appointing Muslims to the aforementioned positions will shift the governance narrative in Edo State, bolster confidence in His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo and the APC as a party. Ultimately, this decision would guide Edo State toward prosperity.

He stated, “This appeal for representation highlights a wider national discourse on including religious and ethnic minorities in Nigeria’s political framework. The group’s demands are expected to intensify debates about fair power distribution as the new Edo administration gets ready to assume office.”

Muhammad also remarked that appointing Muslims to these positions would promote unity, strengthen trust within the Muslim community, and improve governance in the state.

He, nevertheless, assured that EMEGG would remain committed to supporting the Governor-Elect and his dedication to developing a better Edo State.
