Edo Election: Obaseki Forced Out of INEC Office, Sources Claim
Sources claim Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was forced out of the INEC office during the state election. Learn more about the unfolding events.
There are now more information available regarding the circumstances that resulted in Governor Godwin Obaseki being removed from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) building in Edo State, Benin.
Police officers led by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Frank Mba carried out the operation.
Around two in the morning on Sunday, Governor Obaseki arrived at the INEC office and stayed there till law enforcement personnel eventually escorted him out.
Previous reports stated that at around 3:30 a.m., members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Monday Okpebholo’s running mate, Dennis Idahosa, staged a protest outside the INEC building demanding Obaseki’s ouster.

Some mobile cops reportedly yelled, “Leave, leave,” as the governor was being escorted from the property, indicating that they wanted him to depart.
APC National Secretary Surajudeen Basiru spoke to reporters on the governor’s visitation right before Obaseki left. “He is not a candidate,” he said. He has no business being here, the person said, accusing Obaseki of misusing his position by being present.
Obaseki reportedly entered the INEC complex in the dark and made his way upstairs, positioning himself close to the Edo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) office, which was in charge of collating the results.
APC supporters outside the INEC headquarters attempted multiple times to enter the building by pounding on the gate, but security guards stopped them.
Amidst the strain, DIG Frank Mba showed up with his group and went straight to Obaseki’s location, which resulted in the governor’s removal.
