Godwins Omobayo, the newly sworn-in deputy governor of Edo State, expressed his commitment to the existing plan upon assuming office.
He acknowledged that the government had already established the Benin masterplan and was currently working on the Edo Central and Edo North masterplans.
Omobayo emphasized the importance of addressing environmental hazards in Edo North, where illegal mining activities were taking place.
To tackle this issue, the government planned to incorporate a Geographic Information System (GIS) to monitor and regulate these activities.
Additionally, Omobayo expressed confidence in the governor’s achievements and believed that they would secure a significant percentage of votes from Akoko-Edo in the upcoming September 2024 election.

Omobayo’s appointment as deputy governor came after the impeachment of his predecessor, Philip Shaibu.
The impeachment was carried out by the state House of Assembly following the adoption of the report from the impeachment panel led by Justice S. A. Omonua (retd).
The panel was established by the Chief Judge of Edo State to investigate allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.
During the plenary session on April 8, 2024, eighteen out of the twenty lawmakers present voted in favor of the impeachment, while one voted against it.
