Edo Assembly Appeals Shaibu’s Impeachment Ruling – What’s Next?
Find out how Edo Assembly is responding to the court’s decision overturning Shaibu’s impeachment. What’s next for the state?
An appeal has been lodged by the Edo State House of Assembly, known as EDHA, with regard to the ruling made by Justice J. K. Omotosho from Federal High Court in Abuja that overturned Philip Shaibu’s impeachment who was previously serving as Deputy Governor for this state.
The legislators have submitted an injunction to delay the implementation of the verdict while awaiting a review.
On Monday, April 8th, 2024 the State Assembly impeached Shaibu based on findings from a seven-man investigative panel established by the state Chief Judge to look into claims of misconduct brought against him while serving as deputy governor.
Shaibu was accused of perjury and leaking government secrets by the Assembly’s investigative panel led by Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.). Despite concluding its sittings, Shaibu refused to appear before it.
Shaibu was impeached with the support of 18 Assembly members who were present at plenary, while one member refrained from participating in the headcount and voting.
After Shaibu’s impeachment, Governor Godwin Obaseki selected Omobayo Marvellous as his Deputy to serve out the remainder of his second term in office until November 11, 2024.
