APC urges the Edo House of Assembly to impeach Obaseki, citing a threat to burn down Nigeria. Learn more about the controversy.

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Godwin Obaseki without delay, citing his purported threat towards setting fire to the country.

On Monday, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, the State Acting Chairman of the party released a statement to newsmen in Benin City urging for action.

In a viral video, Tenebe reported that the governor had issued a threat to burn down the country if the police fail to apprehend those responsible for murdering Inspector Akor Onuh during last Thursday’s attack at Benin Airport.

The chairman of the APC also urged state legislators to promptly denounce Obaseki’s perilous and irresponsible declaration of setting Nigeria ablaze.

He suggested that in order to prevent and put a stop to the governor’s supposed abhorrent plans, the speaker and members of the Edo State House of Assembly need to commence his impeachment process immediately as it is long overdue.

According to him, the people of Edo can no longer tolerate Governor Obaseki’s persistent use of violent politics that has exacerbated insecurity in the state.

Tenebe accused Governor Obaseki of arming the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and Public Work Volunteers (PUWOV), claiming that they are prepared to physically harm individuals who express dissenting opinions about his contentious administration.

He observed that Obaseki’s recent inclination towards violent behavior, aimed at Nigerian citizens and the state itself, is a dangerous manifestation of insanity. This erratic conduct must be restrained promptly to prevent chaos and an erosion of order in Edo State as well as Nigeria.

He said that over the past 24 hours, Nigerians from various backgrounds have witnessed a theatrical display in which Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki appeared as an antagonist on video gloating and threatening to set Nigeria ablaze if Inspector Akor Onuh’s killers at Benin City Airport are not apprehended by police.

Obaseki’s recent aggressive statement towards Nigeria and its citizens is highly concerning, as it could potentially lead to chaos and disorder in Edo State and the country at large. Urgent measures must be taken to address this dangerous drift into madness.

According to him, not only Edo people but also the governor himself are worried about his cognitive impairment. This is evident from how he prepares his dangerous groups such as ESSN and PUWOV to harm anyone who disagrees with his divisive leadership style.

He claimed that the tragic incident on July 18, 2024 could have been prevented and is a clear illustration of state-sanctioned extrajudicial killings occurring under false pretenses. According to him, reports blaming inter-cultural conflicts in the region are merely deceptive cover-ups by the government.

“It’s time to prevent the governor from carrying out his alleged threat,” proclaimed Tenebe.
