ECOWAS Ministers Convene in Abuja to Discuss Trade and Security
ECOWAS ministers gather in Abuja for a crucial meeting to address regional trade issues and security challenges, aiming to foster economic growth and stability in West Africa.
The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened its 93rd ordinary session on Thursday at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja.
Chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the session will address significant issues related to governance, economic policies, and regional integration.
In his opening remarks, ECOWAS President Omar Touray expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the citizens of Nigeria for their support of the regional organization.
He emphasized the timeliness of the Council’s meeting, given the ongoing challenges facing the region.

President Touray informed the Council that 30 specific agenda items, including trade, security, agriculture, and stability, will be thoroughly reviewed.
Additionally, he raised concerns regarding the decline in community remittances over the past six years, noting that only 40 percent of remittances have been received from member states.
He also praised the peaceful elections held this year in Liberia, Senegal, Togo, and Ghana, highlighting the significance of peaceful democracy in the region.
Touray urged member states to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of ECOWAS.
