Ebonyi Prison Officials Sneak Out Inmate for Lover Visit

Reports indicate that prison officials in Ebonyi facilitated a secret visit for an inmate to see his girlfriend. Explore how this escape unfolded and the implications.

Serious accusations of corruption have been leveled against officials at the Afikpo Correctional Centre in Ebonyi State for allegedly permitting Ibuchi Okoro Eze, a rape offender, to leave the facility for a visitation with his lover.

The Saturday, September 14, 2024, incident has caused uproar and prompted questions about the reliability of Nigeria’s jail system.

Under pressure from their superiors, Ibuchi’s junior policemen are said to have taken him to meet his lover at her bar in Afikpo.

This is not an unusual event, a source inside the facility claims; warders are suspected of taking payments from prisoners in exchange for unapproved privileges, such as trips.

Ibuchi allegedly asked for privacy with his girlfriend at the bar; one of the cops initially objected to the request, but a higher-ranking official eventually gave it permission.

Calls and mails were not answered by Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) spokesperson Umar Abubakar, thus attempts to get a response were not successful.

This alarming case brings to light the pervasive problems with bribery and corruption in Nigeria’s prison system.

Similar methods, such as inmates buying off guards to get access to cell phones, better housing arrangements, and the capacity to plan criminal actions from inside the jail, have been documented in previous studies.

The incident highlights how urgently the Nigerian Correctional Service has to reform in order to combat the systemic corruption that threatens the integrity of the jail system and the legal system.
