Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has issued a warning to revenue collectors, advising them against collecting taxes from vegetable sellers and other small-scale traders.
The caution was communicated through a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, in Abakaliki.
During the swearing-in of members of the Revenue Appeal Commission at the centenary city, New Government House, Abakiliki, the governor emphasized the inhumanity of taxing vegetable sellers and urged them to refrain from such practices.
Nwifuru stressed that taxing individuals selling farm produce in local markets was unnecessary, directing the Revenue Service to focus on larger businesses instead. He encouraged the Revenue Service and Appeal Commission, led by Augustine Nwankwegu, to carry out their duties with empathy to enhance the state’s Internally Generated Revenue without causing inconvenience to the people.
