Ebonyi Chief Justice releases 11 convicts from Afikpo Correctional Centre
On Wednesday, the Chief Judge of Ebonyi, Justice Elvis Ngene, freed 11 convicts from the Afikpo Correctional Centre during a jail delivery.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the top judge discharged convicts with minor offences unconditionally.
Ngene stated that 16 issues were addressed.
According to him, ten detainees were released on bail, one was discharged, and five others were remanded in custody.
Priorities, he added, were given to people who had been held without trial for years, adolescents, and the sick, among others.
He exhorted the newly released inmates to be decent citizens and refrain from doing anything that would bring the long arm of the law down on them.
Benjamin Okpara (26), one of the recipients, expressed gratitude for being considered.
Okpara, who was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, vowed not to return to crime.
He praised God, the state administration, and the judiciary for releasing him.
Mr Christian Inyan, one of the lawyers, stated that he supported the convicts’ release because the majority of them did not commit the crimes charged against them. (NAN)
