Ebonyi Assembly Allocates Over N500 Million for Local Government Election

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has sanctioned a budget exceeding 500 million naira for the organization of local government elections within the state.

Scheduled for July 20, 2024, the council election will be overseen by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, EBSIEC.

The approval was granted by assembly members at the Legislative Complex in Abakaliki during a plenary session.

Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa revealed that the allocated funds will cover election materials, payment of ad-hoc staff of the commission, post-election retreat, and other related expenses.

He emphasized that the upcoming election aims to enhance the effective functioning of the third tier of government, extending to rural areas.

The Speaker praised the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, for ensuring the council election’s execution despite the prevailing economic challenges.

Additionally, Deputy Chief Whip Mr. Lucas Chukwu, representing Ishielu South State Constituency, and Chief Onyebuchi Ogbadu from Ivo, highlighted that the election’s proximity aligns with their statutory duties.

Other members who endorsed the financial allocation include Hon. Chikezie Igu from Ohaozara East and Hon. Godwin Abiri from Izzi West State constituencies.
