According to Muhammad Abubakar, managing director of Galaxy Backbone (GBB), the federal authorities thwarted nearly 200 cyberattacks during the presidential and national assembly elections.

The federal government owns Galaxy Backbone, a company that provides information and communications technology services.

Abubakar spoke on Tuesday in Abuja at the start of a two-day ministerial training for the board members and management team of GBB.

“On the day of the election alone, we were able to block more than 200 attacks, and the next day, the attacks geometrically escalated to nearly 1.2 million and were all blocked from our own enterprises,” he claimed.

This is the first time a government representative has discussed the attempts to hack into the INEC system during the most recent elections.

Political parties claim that hackers tried to rig the election results.

Before the election, INEC gave the assurance that hackers couldn’t access its system for transferring election results.

Isa Pantami, minister of communication and the digital economy, praised GBB’s strategy for developing digital infrastructure while reducing the cost of governance in his remarks at the occasion as well.

Pantami remarked, “In this session, I will be very honest with you to point out some areas where we need major development.

“Training is essential for enhancing performance as well as for self-evaluation, self-judgement, and self-assessment.

“To find new opportunities for generating cash for the government, we need to think creatively.

“When it comes to revenue generating, let’s not keep using the same procedure every day. We need to be proactive in our ideas.”

“Positioning the GBB Team for Successful Management and Leadership in the 4th Industrial Revolution” is the theme of the course.
