During my time with Wizkid’s Starboy Records – L.A.X, my father provided financial support
Nigerian musician Damilola Afolabi, better known by his stage as L.A.X, has disclosed that his rich father interfered with his contract with Wizkid’s Starboy record company when he was there.
The Ginger singer made this revelation on a recent episode of Quincy Jonze’s audiovisual podcast Echo Room.
His agreement with Starboy Record, in his opinion, was more of a partnership than a recording deed.
The money for L.A.X’s musical endeavors came from his father, he said, and Wizkid, the head of his company, directed the money toward the appropriate advertising strategies.
“My dad didn’t like all those signing things,” he claimed when I brought the Wiz’s contract to him. He has the constant impression that signing is equivalent to signing your life away if you deed. Likewise, I always make sure to consult him before deciding on a business matter. I went to see him and informed him, “Daddy, this is a contract, Wiz wants to sign me.” He then asked, “Why don’t we do a partnership?”
“It will be better for you and him [Wizkid] to work together, he said. You may then, like, do your own thing once you two have partnered up on that level. We therefore took that action.
The fact that bag [funds] is significant in music, he said, is that. My popsy [dad] de facto gave me bags, that much is true. However, Wiz always does one thing: he de y spends the bags.
Toyin Lawani, who played Wizkid’s songs for him, introduced him to the musician, L.A. X declaimed.
