Three suspected armed robbers who admitted to being members of the illegal Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to Anambra State Police agents have been detained there.

This was revealed by the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a press statement made available to Obasanjonews24 in Awka, Anambra State.

Ikenga claimed that after being stopped for a search, the individuals involved in the crime exchanged gunfire with police officers at a roadblock.

Ikenga said: “I am happy to give you an update on the successes the Command has accomplished in its fight against crime and criminality. In order to ensure the safety and security of State residents, we have achieved great progress in lowering crime rates and establishing a lasting peace.

“On April 27, 2023, at 7:50 p.m., while performing a stop and search at Afor Nnobi Road, the forward operating base (FOB) in Aguata stopped and searched two vehicles: a black Prado Jeep with registration number GWA 696 CM, Abuja, and an unmarked brown Lexus Jeep.

“The people inside the car wouldn’t stop when the police flagged them down, so they randomly started firing to get away from the police search. The operators confronted the armed individuals in a gunfight, saved one of their victims, and detained three suspected gang members.

The suspects who are currently in jail confessed to being members of the illegal ESN/IPOB group and mentioned the several camps and criminal hideouts from where they operate while other gang members fled the scene.

A number of incriminating items, according to the command, were discovered on the criminals, including three AK-47s, two Cell phones, two Bulletproof vests, two Walking Talkies, one Police uniform (camouflage), four AK-47 magazines, 120 rounds of live ammunition, one Police belt, one Hand glove, two Police boots, two Police caps, one military T-shirt, and one blue Police uniform.

He identified the accused suspects as Haicynth Ujwuika, age 45; Sunday Samuel Akpan, age 31; and Chinonso Offor, alias Wolf, age 24.
