Many diabetics die early due to lack of information– Obasanjo
Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria, cited inadequate diabetes management education as the primary cause of the early death of many patients on Sunday.
At a novelty match between All-Stars FC, Abeokuta, and the former Super Eagles, Obasanjo gave a speech at the MKO Abiola Stadium in the capital of Ogun State, Abeokuta.
The Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation planned the match to honor World Diabetes Day in 2022.
Obasanjo, who has had diabetes for more than 30 years, stressed that even if the condition cannot be cured, it is treatable.
The Balogun Owu said that despite having diabetes for approximately three decades, he is still powerful.
He voiced alarm about the high number of patients who passed away within five years of diagnosis, blaming this on a lack of education and awareness about how to treat the condition.
If a patient properly follows the dos and don’ts of diabetes, he or she may live up to 100 years.
“A diabetic patient must not consume sugar. Once you understand this and follow it, you will be good with any carbohydrate, he said.
