The Department of State Services (DSS) has discovered criminal lairs and retrieved lethal weapons in numerous sites across the nation less than 72 hours before the start of the 2023 general elections, including a building near the airport road in Nasarawa Local Government Area in Kano state.

Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS Public Relations Officer, acknowledged this in a statement on Thursday in which he refuted claims that the agency’s operations in Kano State were directed at a particular political party.

A rifle, daggers, swords, and jack knives are among the items that were retrieved from the aforementioned home in Kano State.

Parallel to this, the DSS detained suspected gun smugglers in the states of Kaduna and Zamfara, including one named Aliyu Yahaya who is thought to be a supplier of weapons to suspected bandit Kachalla Damina, who is thought to be active in the area of Dansadau in Zamfara State. RPG rifles and ammunition stashes were among the weapons discovered.

Also, it detained one Fajuwon Isaac in Delta State and found over 4,500 rounds of ammunition for pump action rifles among other weapons. Meanwhile, in Anambra State, four suspects were apprehended in possession of an AK-47 and about 4,000 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

The DSS urged voters to uphold law and order while guaranteeing everyone in Nigeria’s safety before, during, and after the elections.

“The DSS pledges to conduct the exercise in a calm manner. It commits to upholding the democratic process with its professionalism, neutrality, and staff’s excellent behaviour,” Afunanya stated.

Even after the elections, it will carry out its mandate of providing fast, proactive, and actionable intelligence needed for tactical, operational, and strategic choices.
