Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has stated that state governors ought to choose the new minimum salary that might be given to employees.
The National Minimum Wage Act, which requires governors to provide a consistent minimum wage to employees in their respective states, was criticised by Okupe.
During her Friday appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Okupe stated: “We shouldn’t create laws that are all-inclusive and require all governors in the federation to abide by them. On their own, they are subnationalities.

For example, why should I pay the minimum wage in Sokoto if it’s already the case in Lagos? Let each governor determine, on behalf of his own state and people, what he can afford.
This occurred after labour decreased their demand from N494,000 to N250,000 and the Federal Government suggested a new N62,000 package.
Labour declared an indefinite strike on Monday in response to demands for a higher salary; however, on Tuesday, the walkout was called off.
The industrial action was cancelled to allow for additional talks.
State governors have bemoaned their inability to pay N60,000 in the meantime.
They mentioned that the present N30,000 minimum wage is unaffordable in several states.
