Doguwa calls on the Federal Government and NNPCL to revert to the old fuel prices, citing concerns over the impact of recent increases.

Alhassan Doguwa, the elected representative of Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency in Kano State’s House of Representatives has called upon both the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and the Federal Government to take swift action and revert back to previous petroleum pump prices for Premium Motor Spirit (commonly known as fuel).

On Thursday, Doguwa issued a statement in which he expressed his dismay at private companies exploiting loopholes within the system to reap unjust profits while disregarding the well-being of Nigerians. As chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), he strongly denounced this behavior as unacceptable.

Petrol prices experienced a constant increase during the recent previous administration and have not shown any indication of slowing down after the removal of subsidies.

Fuel scarcity worsened earlier this week, with major cities experiencing prolonged queues while black market vendors exploited the situation and charged as high as N1,500 per litre.

The selling price of the product at NNPCL mega filling stations in Abuja and Lagos, which are both national capitals, is N880. On the other hand, independent marketers sell it for a higher rate ranging between N950 to N970 per litre.

As a result, Nigerians are expressing their dissatisfaction and questioning how the government can expect them to manage the increasing expenses of daily life – such as transportation – after announcing a new minimum wage not long ago.

Part of the statement suggested that both the Nigerian government and NNPCL should take into account Nigerians’ predicament and halt this latest surge in pump prices, according to our committee’s recommendation.

He suggested, “Given the difficulties Nigeria is facing presently, it’s not in our collective best interest to add any more burden. It would be wise to return to the old pump price as soon as possible and engage with major stakeholders proactively for problem-solving.”

The Chairman of the Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft and Vandalisation of pipelines, Doguwa, has expressed willingness to address the issue that results in government revenue loss due to crude oil losses.

“As a dedicated committee, we will actively explore avenues to connect with young people and community leaders in oil-producing regions. Our aim is to address the recurring issue of crude oil theft that can disrupt petrol supply throughout the country.”

The lawmaker stated that they are collaborating with security agencies to secure important facilities such as oil pipelines in the country. According to him, reinstating the former pump price will promote peace and stability among Nigerians, allowing them to carry out their daily activities without any disruptions.

He further recommended that Nigerians grant the Tinubu-led government an opportunity to revamp the oil and gas industry. He noted that Nigeria’s wealth in this sector, combined with efforts to reinvigorate her refineries through the Petroleum Industry Act, will soon produce favorable results for all citizens.

He said that the government’s efforts to begin operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries lead us to believe these issues will cease.

The APC leader expressed that the oil and gas sector faces significant issues due to previous administrations not taking necessary actions. However, the current government under APC is determined to elevate Nigeria’s position in global affairs.

Despite our current struggles, we can look forward to a brighter future. Although the measures being taken by the government may cause discomfort now, soon we will feel proud as Nigerians because of what lies ahead. Doguwa emphasized that Tinubu has good intentions for us and aims to create a legacy that upcoming generations will be pleased with.
