In the Philippines, a radio anchor was shot and killed while doing a live broadcast.
DJ Johnny Walker, Juan Jumalon, was shot inside his home studio, according to the authorities.
“In the strongest terms,” President Marcos Jr. denounced the radio journalist’s murder.
Since Mr. Marcos Jr. assumed office in June 2022, four journalists have died, according to the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines.
The union declared, “The attack is even more condemnable because it happened at Jumalon’s own home, which doubled as the radio station.”
Around 05:30 local time, when Mr. Jumalon was live-streaming on Facebook, the suspect entered the recording booth and fired a shot.
The suspect requested authorization to enter Mr. Jumalon’s radio booth in order to say “something important on air,” according to local media that cited police sources.
Authorities claim to have previously obtained local CCTV footage.
Typically, 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM’s Facebook page, which has about 2,400 followers, hosts Mr. Jumalon’s broadcasts.
Following the event, the DJ’s wife drove him to the hospital, where it is understood that upon arrival, the medics declared him dead.
According to the police, they had not heard of any prior threats against his life.
The police have been ordered to conduct “a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice,” according to a post made by the president on X.
According to Freedom House, a US-based organisation, the Philippines is among the world’s most hazardous locations for journalists.
