Dino Melaye has successfully concluded a six-year legal battle against the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police. Read about the implications of his victory.
Former Senator Dino Melaye has been cleared of charges in the twelfth and final case filed against him by the Federal Government, bringing a conclusion to an extensive six-year legal saga.
Judge Sylvanus Oriji of the FCT High Court in Maitama issued the ruling, acquitting Melaye of charges related to supplying false information about an alleged assassination attempt against him in 2017.
The legal saga commenced in February 2018, when Melaye was accused of falsely accusing Edward Onoja, who was the Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello at the time, of being involved in an assassination plot. Since then, this case has been one among several legal challenges that Melaye has encountered over the years.
After being acquitted, Melaye expressed his gratitude on the social media platform X on Monday, thanking his legal team and expressing his faith in divine justice.

“I face life as it unfolds, yet through all its ups and downs, my trust lies solely in God. He is forever with those who are just,” he expressed.
In his post, he remarked, “Justice has been served after six years. Although justice was delayed, it wasn’t denied. All praise to God alone as Sen. Dino Melaye scores 12 against the Federal Government and IGP’s zero—victorious in all 12 cases by God’s grace.”
The initial case concerning the purported assassination attempt experienced delays, one of which was due to the unfortunate passing of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu, who was presiding over the matter. He passed away during a cross-over service on December 31, 2017.
On January 31, 2018, the Attorney General’s Office officially charged Melaye, asserting that his allegations were baseless. These charges arose from an investigation into the alleged assassination attempt in his hometown of Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State.
On March 1, 2018, he entered a plea of not guilty.
Other purported assassination attempts
Once more, in July 2018, Melaye alleged that the Kogi State police command was trying to kill him.
He accused this in response to allegations that his security team had fired at police officers conducting ‘stop and search’ operations in Mopa.
In March 2019, Melaye once more claimed that the Kogi State government was involved in a plot against his life, an allegation that state officials denied.
