The need to clean up Nigeria’s electoral system has been highlighted by Senator Seriake Dickson, who believes this will decrease the amount of election-related lawsuits and improve public trust in the process.

On Friday, during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today show, Senator Dickson of Bayelsa West constituency disclosed that the National Assembly has commenced plans to modify the electoral law.

Senator Dickson stated that the electoral amendment committee has initiated work on the crucial aspect of electoral law.

Once again, we are conducting a thorough evaluation of the electoral law to support the facilitation of equitable and unbiased elections. Our aim is to minimize conflicts, objections, disputes and dissatisfaction which were evident even in instances such as in Supreme Court where some people rejected its verdict.

Electronic voting can be rephrased as digital or online ballot casting, which is a process of electronically recording and transmitting votes.

The lawmaker advocated for the implementation of electronic voting in national elections, citing that human involvement allows room for manipulation.

In summary, our goal in this country is to establish electronic voting that minimizes human interference which can lead to manipulation, inducement and intimidation. We are striving for consensus-building within the National Assembly with some progress being made although success remains uncertain.

Thankfully, technology came to our aid. According to him, during 2015 when President Jonathan was in office and working for the country’s best interests as well as our political party’s survival, he recognized the importance of using a card reader which turned out to be a significant advancement towards preserving democracy.

The governing party has not exhibited a strong inclination towards cleaning up the electoral process or prioritizing the nation’s welfare over their own and that of their political organization. It is crucial for them to proactively advocate for and endorse technological advancements on a national scale.

Dickson stated that, in the event of such a scenario occurring prior to 2027, it is essential for us to have employed technological solutions and made them accessible as other nations are already doing so.

Constitutional amendment.

President Bola Tinubu was requested by the Patriots, headed by ex-Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku, to assemble a national constituent assembly for authoring of a fresh constitution in Nigeria.

Senator Dickson expressed his complete support for the Patriots’ call, asserting that Nigeria’s constitutional review or reform is fundamental in addressing most of its challenges as a nation.

Dickson stated that our current constitution is a national priority as it has hindered our ability to be productive. Additionally, the ineffectiveness of the grassroots administrative and local government systems can be attributed to its nature.

He stated that the constitution is responsible for the excessive and burdened central government.
