Suspected bandits have set fire to more than twenty fields that grow maize, soy beans and guinea corn in Kontagora, the seat of Kontagora Local Government Area in Niger State.
According to a source, the bandits left notes threatening to assault them again unless they paid a N30 million charge per.
He claimed that people who called the specified number were informed that their produce had been burned and that they would face consequences if they did not pay the fee.

In order to restore normalcy and allow farmers to carry out their regular operations, he made a plea to the federal and state governments to address the ongoing attacks against them.
He claimed that they had just woken up to the tragic event and that, when they had arranged their crops in preparation for harvest, the crops had been set on fire.
“And notices were hung in our respective farms asking us to pay N30m levy each in Arabic with a phone number,” he bemoaned.
He bemoaned the destruction of a farm that might have produced roughly 50 bags of maize and another 60 bags of soybeans.
Before it burned destroyed, he claimed that his farm had beans and Guinea maize ready for harvest.
Security personnel have not responded to the incident, and a state police spokesman was not available for comment.
