In Mali’s Mopti region, intense clashes between the army and jihadist militants have resulted in numerous casualties. The ongoing conflict underscores the severe security challenges faced by the country.

On Thursday, a confrontational encounter between jihadists affiliated with the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and Mali’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS) in Mopti region resulted in no fewer than fifteen FDS officers losing their lives. These soldiers were conducting routine patrols aimed at safeguarding farmers who were en route to their fields when they came under attack.

Equipped with motorcycles, vehicles and on foot, jihadists launched an unexpected attack near a hillside that was met with heavy gunfire from the Malian army. This resulted in a prolonged exchange of fire leading to one gendarme and 14 national guard members losing their lives while others are injured or missing according to reports. Meanwhile, sources suggest minimal losses were sustained by the attackers during the incident.

The current security challenges in central Mali are brought to light by this incident, as jihadist factions persistently occupy areas, enforce their own regulations and detain over 150 civilians for extended periods. Despite attempts at securing the region, these groups remain a significant obstacle to achieving stability there.
