David Mark, the former President of the Senate, has reflected on Nigeria’s past and concluded that it is now a time for sober contemplation.

A statement from Paul Mumeh, the former Senate President’s Media Adviser, on Tuesday revealed that Mark urged for sober reflection in a goodwill message to Nigerians.

The statement noted that Mark reflected on Nigeria’s journey to date, acknowledging the challenges of insecurity, poverty, disease, and overall underdevelopment. Despite these obstacles, he emphasized that Nigeria “is endowed with human and natural resources capable of turning the country’s fortunes around for good.”

“This can be achieved if all citizens are united by a shared sense of patriotism and common purpose.”

Although the situation may appear disappointing, the mistakes of the past should be valuable lessons for future progress.

“We need to learn from our past errors and strive for a brighter future,” Mark remarked.

He said that the 30-month-old civil war, sporadic ethno-religious conflicts, and uncertainties in political engagements all stemmed from leadership deficiencies and failures of citizenship.

However, he warned against divisive tendencies and inflammatory statements that have recently worsened the already fragmented atmosphere.
