The appeal filed by Kano Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) against his All Progressive Congress (APC) nominee, Nasiru Gawuna, has been scheduled for hearing by the Appeal Court in Abuja on Monday.
In an attempt to contest the Kano Election Petition Tribunal’s annulment of his election, the governor has filed an appeal.
Remember that on September 20, 2023, a three-judge bench headed by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay dismissed Yusuf, stating that 165,663 of his votes were void because “they were not signed or stamped by INEC.”

The tribunal’s decision was seen by Yusuf to be “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the opposition APC, and Governor Yusuf and his party, the NNPP, are parties to the lawsuit.
After receiving 1,019,602 votes to Gawuna’s 890,705 votes, INEC pronounced Yusuf the winner of the March 18, 2023 election.
But after the tribunal subtracted 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total, his votes fell to 853,939, which was 30,000 fewer than Gawuna’s 890,705 votes.
As a result, the court directed the INEC to revoke Yusuf’s certificate and proclaimed the APC candidate the victor of the gubernatorial contest.
