Segun Iwaetan was found guilty of being a cultist and raping a virgin aged 20 by an Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti. He was sentenced to death by hanging.

The court gave the 24-year-old guy two sentences: one for raping his neighbor, a Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti student, at gunpoint, and the other for being a cultist: life in prison and execution by hanging.

Iwaetan was tried for seven offenses, including participation in a hidden cult, unauthorized possession of a handgun, and rape.

The accusation reads, “On January 16, 2021 at Federal Polytechnic Road, Segun Iwaetan and Atila Iwaetan (now at large) conspired to commit burglary and stealing, break into the shop of one Olayemi Oyerinde, and receive stolen properties such as 15 polo shirts, 50 jean trousers, 30 pairs of leather slippers, among others, worth over N1.8million.

“On February 5th, 2021, Iwaetan committed a sexual assault on a 20-year-old student while illegally carrying two weapons in Ado Ekiti’s Odo Ado Street. He was discovered to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity Secret Cult on February

In her evidence, the rape victim said, “On that day, the defendant entered my room at three in the morning and held a pistol at me, threatening to shoot me if I shouted. He forced me to go naked and then had sex with me. I was still a virgin at the time he sexually assaulted me. He then pleaded with me to forgive him and urged me not to tell anyone.

Albert Adeyemi, the prosecution, summoned five witnesses, provided a search warrant, the defendant’s statement, two locally produced weapons as evidence, and a medical report.

Delivering the verdict, Justice Adeniyi Familoni condemned the defendant on four of the charges.

The defendant was found guilty of conspiracy and illegally possessing guns, and the judge sentenced him to 12 years in prison in each case, without the possibility of a fine. The sentences began to run concurrently from the day of the defendant’s arrest and incarceration.
