The Anambra Police Command has attributed the recent surge in cult-related killings in Awka, the state capital, to the release of suspected suspects from custody, as stated by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, during an interview with journalists in Awka.
Reports indicate that on Easter day, at least five individuals lost their lives, with an unconfirmed number being fatally shot in various locations in the town on Sunday.
In response to these tragic events, Aderemi mentioned that the police force is actively engaging with the judiciary to investigate the circumstances surrounding the release of the cult suspects.
Despite not receiving any official reports regarding the alleged killings on Sunday, the Commissioner urged individuals with relevant information to come forward and assist the police in their inquiries.

Aderemi highlighted that Awka had been free from cult-related violence for approximately six months due to the security measures put in place by the command, emphasizing that the recent resurgence can be linked to the release of previously detained cultists.
He further mentioned that he had already contacted the Attorney General to delve into how these individuals were able to regain their freedom, expressing his commitment to addressing this issue with the judiciary.
