On Tuesday, May 28, a coalition of civil society organisations bemoaned the fact that, in the course of numerous attacks and conflicts in Nigeria over the past year, 4416 people have died and 4334 have been kidnapped.
At a press conference held in Abuja to mark “the 7th national day of mourning for victims of mass atrocities account for the missing and the dead, and ensure justice for mass atrocities,” the 84 CSOs lead by global rights made this announcement.

On the other hand, the organisation insisted that the Nigerian government protect the lives and property of Nigerians and fulfil its constitutional duties under Section 14(2)(b) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) Constitution.

Additionally, they called on all levels of government to address the stark socioeconomic disparities that are escalating violent crimes nationwide.

The briefing’s text says, in part: “We, the undersigned civil society organisations, reiterate our call to the government to fulfil its constitutional duty of ensuring the security and well-being of all citizens in observance of the 2024 National Day of Mourning and in assessment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office.
