Another court ruling restrains PDP from conducting congresses in Rivers. Stay updated on the latest developments in this ongoing political saga.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its National Chairman, Iliya Umar Damagum and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu have been issued with a restraining order by the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt.

Until the hearing and resolution of a lawsuit brought forth by authentic members from different wards in all 23 local government areas within Rivers State, the party as well as its representatives are forbidden from hosting Wards, Local Government Areas and State congresses.

The order of restraint was issued by Justice Charles Wali, and he specifically instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), as well as the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Director-General of Department for State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure compliance with his directive.

Further hearing on the case has been scheduled for August 1st, 2024 following its adjournment.

On Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja advised the PDP of Rivers State to carry out its ward, local government and state congresses.

Justice Peter Lifu’s decision prohibited the DSS, Police, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and seven other entities from impeding the congresses.

Remember that the congresses have been planned to appoint fresh officials who will manage the affairs of PDP at different levels in Rivers State.

The PDP was instructed by Justice Lifu to strictly follow the guidelines and amended timetable for their activities. This will be in effect until a motion on notice is determined concerning an interlocutory injunction that has been filed together with the ex parte motion.

In addition to the previous order, he also prohibited the PDP and three national officers from permitting individuals who failed to obtain nomination or ad hoc forms within the designated timeframe outlined in the guidelines from running for any elective office or holding positions as ad hoc delegates at a national level. This restriction will remain in effect until a decision has been made regarding the motion that is already pending.

The judge postponed the hearing to August 15, requiring all parties to present their defensive arguments.

Before the Federal High Court’s decision, a court in Rivers State had issued an injunction against the PDP, its national chairman, financial secretary and organizing secretary preventing them from conducting their congress slated for July 27th of 2024 within River States.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, David Omereji along with ten others filed an ex parte application against the defendants and received an order issued by Justice Sobere Hambo.
