Yusuf Haruna, 18, was remanded in a correctional facility by a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kano on Wednesday. He was accused of fatally stabbing Sani Mohammed, 45, an imam.
The defendant is accused of criminal homicide. He resides in Tudun Nufawa Quarters, Kano.

Musa Yunusa, who lives at the same home, reported the incident to the Jakara Police Division Kano on December 31, 2023, according to the prosecutor, Mrs. Fatima Ado-Ahmad, who testified in court.
She claimed that the defendant attacked the 45-year-old Imam at around 7:00 p.m. and fatally stabbed him in the back with a sharp knife.
“As a result, the victim suffered severe injuries and was taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialty Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him deceased.”
The accused refuted having committed the crime.
According to the prosecution, the act was committed in violation of Penal Code Section 221.
The defendant was placed under detention in a penitentiary facility by Chief Magistrate Binta Ibrahim-Galadanchi’s ruling.
She postponed the issue until January 31 in order to discuss it more.
In a similar development, Haruna Sani, Yusuf’s father, was charged with concealing his son from the Chief Magistrates’ Court over the suspected murder.
The defendant, who resides in Tudun Nufawa Quarters in Kano, is accused of screening of offenders in violation of Section 167 of the Penal Code. The charge is pending trial.
Ado-Ahmad, the prosecution’s attorney, claimed that on December 31, 2023, the defendant reportedly hid his son after the latter fatally stabbed the Imam.
To the charge, the defendant entered a not guilty plea.
The defence attorneys’ request for bail was denied by the prosecutor.
In response, the defence attorney, Ahmad Rufa’i, who was representing Mr. Rabiu Sidi in his brief, asked the judge to release the accused on bond in accordance with Sections 35 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution as amended as well as Section 168 of the ACJL 2019 for Kano State.
The defendant was placed under detention in a penitentiary facility by Chief Magistrate Binta Ibrahim-Galadanchi’s ruling.
Ibrahim-Galadanchi postponed the decision on the bail application until January 31.
