Five individuals were placed under detention on Monday by the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly attempting to kill a farmer in Ogbomoso.
Ademola Isiaka, 58; Alabi Rasak, 58; Ademola Aremu, 22; Muritala Habideen, 24; and Abisoye Taiwo, 55, were named as the defendants.
The defendants’ pleas were rejected by Chief Magistrate Mrs. O. O. Ogunkanmi, who instead ordered their incarceration at the Abolongo detention centre in Oyo Town, pending the Oyo State Director of Public Prosecutions’ recommendation.
Ogunkanmi postponed the case’s resolution until February 5, 2024.
The defendants were accused by the police of two charges each of conspiracy and attempted murder.
In8sp Sikiru Opaleye, the prosecutor, said the court that the defendants plotted to carry out the Dec. 10 attempted murder with the help of other fugitives.
Opaleye said that the defendants tried to shoot 40-year-old Mr. Musefiu Raimi in the leg during the hours of 8:00 am and 12:30 pm in the Ilajue neighbourhood of Ogbomoso.
As the complainant rode a motorbike back from the farm, the defendants set up a roadblock.
“The complainant attempted to turn around and flee upon seeing the roadblock, but the defendants shot him in the leg,” he stated.
According to Opaleye, the acts violated sections 320 and 324 of the 2000 Oyo State Laws Criminal Code.
