Former President Olusegun Obasanjo describes corruption as a persistent menace plaguing Nigeria, calling for intensified efforts to combat it.
On Friday, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo referred to corruption as a formidable monster that Nigeria must overcome in order to achieve any significant progress.
He announced this during the memorial service for Justice Olayinka Ayoola (retd.), a former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The event took place at Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Agodi, Oke-Ado in Ibadan, which is the capital of Oyo State.
Reports indicate that Ayoola passed away on August 20, 2024, at the age of 90.
Continuing his remarks, Obasanjo stated, “Corruption is a formidable monster that continues to challenge us in the nation. It’s not that ICPC and Ayoola have failed in their duties or even myself as the one who appointed him; it’s the immense pressure of this pervasive cancer of corruption.”
Today, I stand before you to honor the life of this remarkable man—a great Nigerian, a proud African, and a distinguished global figure—and all that he accomplished among us.
During her tribute, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun remarked, “Everyone gathered here should reflect on the role we wish to play in this place where we find ourselves. What will be said about us when our time comes?”

He has made a lasting impact, leaving an unforgettable mark on history. We hold him in high regard for everything he accomplished to elevate Nigeria’s reputation. In every role he served, he proudly represented our nation. His absence will be deeply felt, and the legacy he’s left behind is something we should all cherish with pride.
Reverend Simeon Onaleke, the Bishop of the Diocese in Agodi, emphasized during his sermon titled “Serving God’s Purpose in Our Generation” that there should be laws preventing corrupt politicians from running for office again.
“Engage in actions that leave a lasting impression on others. Avoid wasting energy seeking out adversaries. Ayoola confronted numerous challenges, not with weapons like guns or swords, and he succeeded admirably.”
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court Hajo Sarki Bello; Justice Akintola Ladiran; Oyo State Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima; as well as Justices Ogunwumiju, Adamu Jauro, Chidiebere Uwa, Habeeb Adewale Abiru, and other members of the Supreme Court.
