Consumer Takes Action: Reasons Behind Legal Action Against MultiChoice Over Tariff Hike Revealed

In a recent announcement, Multichoice Nigeria, the parent company of Nigerian pay television providers DStv and GOtv, revealed that they would be implementing a price increase for their packages. Despite a court order, the new prices went into effect on May 1, 2024, much to the dismay of many Nigerians.

The South African-owned company attributed the price hike to a rise in the cost of business operations. As a result, customers on the DStv premium bouquet will now have to pay N37,000 instead of the previous N29,500, while those on Compact+ will see their fees increase from N19,800 to N25,000.

Similarly, customers on the Compact bouquet will now have to pay N15,700, up from N12,500. The price adjustments also extend to the GOtv packages, with increases ranging from Supa Plus to Smallie.

Unsurprisingly, the news of the price increase has sparked anger among Nigerians. Many individuals, including the General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministry, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, have expressed their intention to boycott the cable network.

Apostle Chinyere took to his Facebook page to voice his concerns, stating that the current economic reality in Nigeria has made it difficult for millions of Nigerians to afford the DSTV/GOTV subscription.

He declared that he would not be renewing his subscription until the prices are reduced, and he would be actively seeking alternative options for his viewing needs.

While he acknowledged the importance of news and OPM TV, a 24-hour television station he watches when he has the chance, he firmly stated his stance against renewing his DSTV subscription until the prices become more affordable.
