Commotion as DSS seeks to detain an incoming Anambra lawmaker
The incident happened on Thursday during the Seventh Assembly’s farewell Thanksgiving service.
As they attempted to arrest a lawmaker-elect on Thursday, Department of State Services (DSS) agents made a commotion at the Anambra State House of Assembly Complex, Awka.
According to reports, DSS agents broke into the Assembly Complex and attempted to kidnap Onyekachukwu Ike, the representative-elect for the Nnewi North State Constituency.
The operatives initially took him into custody, put him in the trunk of a car, and forced him to leave the Complex before they were halted.
An eyewitness said that the security guards at the Assembly’s gate shut the Complex gate after observing the strange situation and forbade the operatives from leaving in the vehicle with the lawmaker-elect.
The incident happened following the Seventh Assembly’s farewell Thanksgiving service.
Ike had to be freed from the DSS agents thanks to the involvement of the Deputy Governor, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who attended the meeting in the place of outgoing Speaker Uche Okafor.
Esther Aneto, the acting clerk of the assembly, claims that before acting against the lawmaker-elect, the operatives failed to notify either the House leadership or even the police officers stationed in the building.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police public relations officer, who confirmed the event, claimed it had been settled but acknowledged he was unaware of the precise circumstances behind the attempted arrest.
