According to a report from CNN, a majority of US voters, specifically 67%, believe that former President Donald Trump outperformed Joe Biden in the first presidential debate.
The media outlets have highlighted Biden’s awkward pauses, inaccurate statements, and failure to outline his own accomplishments during the 90-minute debate.
On the other hand, Trump’s performance was seen as stronger by the majority of voters. Prior to the debate, 55% of the same group of voters expected Trump to have a stronger showing, while 45% had more confidence in Biden. Despite the criticism, Biden defended his performance, stating that “we did well” and attributing the difficulty of debating a “liar.”
However, the Washington Post reported that many Democrats were dismayed by Biden’s performance, with some even calling for him to step down and make way for a younger candidate.
The sentiment of panic among Democrats was also evident on Capitol Hill. First Lady Jill Biden expressed support for her husband, while Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the contrast between Biden and Trump in an interview with CNN.
