The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has asked Nigeria’s politicians and religious leaders to be calm as they get ready for the 2023 elections.
The CAN warned church leaders to use caution when speaking and to keep in mind that there will be life after the election.
The group expressed its gratitude to the Almighty God for ensuring Nigeria’s survival in 2022.
In a letter for the new year sent to Nigerians, especially Christians, and signed by its president, Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh, CAN said that criminal groups have tried in horrible ways to take Nigerians’ lives and freedom.
The Christian organisation also pointed out that another factor contributing to the nation’s high level of tension was the economy, which has been steadily declining.
The leading Christian organisation expressed gratitude to God for guiding the populace through the perils and hazards of the year 2022 while holding them by the hand.

The statement added that 2022 was one too many due to the “apparently unabated climate of dread and uncertainty, not just in Nigeria.”
Nigerians have till 2023 to turn things around by electing decisive and compassionate leaders who would take the nation to new heights, according to CAN.
Okoh pleaded with the nation’s security agencies to assist in the holding of peaceful general elections in 2023 and urged them not to give up on their efforts to preserve the safety and security of the nation.
“Our politicians need to understand that Nigeria is the only country we have.” Because of this, they need to be motivated to play politics more responsibly and with the good of the people in mind.
The general elections in 2023 are not the end of the world, he continued, and “in the same vein, religious leaders should recognise that.”
