The Nigeria Police Force, Zone 5, has reaffirmed the prohibition on using fireworks both during and after the holiday season.
Lawan Jimeta, the AIG in charge of the zone that includes the states of Edo and Delta, made this announcement in a statement released by DSP Tijani Momoh, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, on Saturday in Abuja.
According to Jimeta, the explosive devices have the potential to endanger lives and property, disrupt public tranquility, and unnecessarily frighten locals.
The zone hereby urges the general public, parents and guardians alike, to refrain from detonating or lighting these devices in light of the aforementioned.
“Parents are to discourage their kids and wards from buying or using these things.”
Retailers of these devices are also urged to stop selling them, as anyone or any group of people discovered disobeying the order would be detained and prosecuted as a result, he said.
Furthermore, because the Christian faithful and others in the zone are celebrating Christmas, the AIG chose this medium to send his holiday greetings to them.
He told the people in the zone that the zonal command was ready to make sure that everyone and everything was safe and secure over the holidays.
He said that the area has put in place enough security measures, both in terms of people and things, to guarantee a smooth and trouble-free holiday season.
Jimeta added that everyone should observe the celebrations in moderation while always remaining aware of their surroundings for security reasons.
He urged that suspicious people or movements be reported right away to the local police station.
