Sowore comments on Christians waving Israeli and Palestinian flags, emphasizing that flying the Russian flag is not a crime.
According to Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), displaying Russian flags during protests is not illegal.
“It is not a treasonable offence,” Sowore maintained.
He claims that church leaders display Israeli flags, while many individuals exhibit Palestinian flags in support of their cause.
Following President Bola Tinubu’s order for security agencies to take action against individuals displaying Russian flags in the country, this remark has been released.
On Monday, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Christopher Musa briefed State House correspondents after the National Security Council meeting to announce this information.
In clear and unequivocal language, we wish to warn that the President has articulated our stance: We shall not tolerate any person who hoists a foreign flag in Nigeria.
He cautioned that engaging in such conduct would be considered treason, and appropriate actions will ensue. Therefore, individuals mustn’t become pawns at the mercy of others.
On Tuesday, Sowore posted on his X handle to express that he believed the military’s position was a diversion tactic intended to make Nigerians forget about the reason for their protest.
According to him, flying Russian flags during protests is not a crime and does not amount to treason. He drew comparisons with Christian leaders who sometimes display Israeli flags in churches and the popularity of Palestinian flag displays as an expression of support for their cause.
The intention behind this is to distract Nigerians from the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement aimed at protesting against the @officialABAT government.
“If you truly care about the Nigerian flag, then why did you command @HQNigerianArmy to kill young Nigerians who were waving flags and singing the national anthem during the #EndSARS protest in 2020? Stop pretending! You’re a bunch of hypocrites! #RevolutionNow.”
