A cholera outbreak in Sokoto State has claimed 25 lives, with 15 others hospitalized. Health authorities are intensifying efforts to contain the disease.
At least 25 people have died and several others have been hospitalized due to an outbreak of gastroenteritis, also known as cholera, in three council areas: Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware local government areas of the state.
The state health commissioner, Asabe Balarabe, revealed to journalists in Sokoto that the state is currently treating 15 individuals affected by the outbreak from active cases located in the Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware local government areas.
She stated that the 15 active cases were diagnosed through laboratory tests involving culture and sensitivity, confirming them as part of the outbreak.
She also revealed that 1,160 individuals were reportedly affected by the outbreak, and 25 of them have already died from the disease.
She stated that the state rescue teams are collaborating with the government to control and prevent any further spread of the dreaded disease.
She characterized the state government’s response to the outbreak as swift and effective, noting that medication has already been acquired and distributed across 18 local government areas as a measure to curb the ongoing spread of the disease.
