A restoration to the parliamentary form of government has been demanded by Rep. Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and representative for PDP-Rivers.

In order to address the issues facing the nation, Chinda, who made the plea on Monday in Abuja, stated that it was necessary to put the country’s parliamentary system of governance into practice.

The member clarified that native ancestry was not taken into consideration when replicating the existing presidential form of governance.

He contends that the current system is biassed against success given our varied backgrounds, life experiences, and diversity—all of which ought to work to our benefit.

“When you look at the countries where systems of government are copied, you see that they embrace a system of government while taking into account their culture, beliefs, and society.

However, in Nigeria, we either imitate what we see in the UK or what we see in the US without considering our own history. And for that reason, we are requesting an indigenous political structure.
We have to bend it to fit our unique history. And for that reason, we feel that the moment is right for us to proceed,” he stated.

According to Chinda, successive administrations in Nigeria have attempted to reduce the expense of governance.

He declared that attempts to combine government departments and reduce the salary and benefits of public office holders had failed.

It’s all motion without movement, he says. Doing something basic is necessary if we are to proceed.

Chinda claimed that research had been done on the reasons behind the collapse of the first republic’s parliamentary system, which was attributed to ignorance.

He claimed that the parliamentary system is inexpensive and self-policing as it doesn’t take much to remove an unscrupulous official and make those holding public office take notice.

According to Obasanjonews.com, the parliamentary system of governance entails that the party with the highest legislative representation forms the government, with its leader serving as prime minister.
