Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has offered some optimism in his most recent report, just three days after English Premier League team Chelsea suffered a serious setback in their pursuit of Victor Osimhen after Serie A president Aurelio De Laurentiis claimed that the Nigerian international was set to sign a new contract at the club.
Osimhen’s transfer to Chelsea had been rumoured, with the London team allegedly expressing serious interest in acquiring the striker as early as January.
He scored 31 goals in all competitions last season, helping Napoli snap a 33-year drought without a Serie A championship.
Numerous clubs expressed interest in hiring him throughout the summer due to his outstanding performances, but the Naples-based team was able to hang onto their star.
Speaking to reporters just now, De Laurentiis claimed that Osimhen was about to agree to a contract extension at Napoli that was suggested last summer.
Some Chelsea supporters were disappointed by the remarks made by the Napoli manager, as they had intended to sign the Nigerian striker who had recently declared that Didier Drogba, the club’s hero, was his idol. The Ivorian player also named the Nigerian striker as his favourite active player.
Romano, nevertheless, believes that Osimhen’s future is still unclear, therefore Blues supporters should have hope.
Osimhen still has the option of signing a new deal with Napoli, but Romano says in his daily briefing that everything is “all open.”
Osimhen was crowned the Italian Footballers’ Association Footballer of the Year on Monday night for his outstanding performance with the Neopolitans last season. Osimhen finished in eighth place in the 2023 Ballon d’Or award in Paris in October.
