Mykhaylo Mudryk has moved from Shakhtar Donetsk to the Premier League. Chelsea beat out Arsenal to sign the Ukrainian star.
Mykhaylo Mudryk, a Ukrainian international, has officially joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk.
The 22-year-old signed an eight-and-a-half-year deal with the Blues, who reportedly spent £89 million (€100 million) to beat off London rivals Arsenal.
Since Mudryk officially announced his wish to join the team last year and continued to drop hints on social media throughout the transfer window, the Gunners’ interest in him has been well documented throughout the season.
However, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly approved a last-minute swoop to win the fight for the winger when it was revealed that Premier League leaders Arsenal were moving on with their own agreement.
On Saturday, Shakhtar announced via social media that a deal with Chelsea was imminent. On the Blues’ official channels, the post was shared.
On Sunday, Chelsea made the official announcement when Mudryk was present at Stamford Bridge for the Premier League matchup with Crystal Palace.
Mudryk expressed his joy at joining Chelsea on the official website.
“At this point in my career, this is a really appealing proposition for me because it’s a big club in a great league.” I’m looking forward to working with Graham Potter and his colleagues and getting to know my new team members.
This season, Mudryk stood out for Shakhtar in the Champions League, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
He joins Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana, and Joao Felix, who signed on loan from Atletico Madrid until the end of the season, as Chelsea’s fifth signing of a hectic transfer window.
Graham Potter’s team lost for the eighth time in ten games after Joao Felix, on his debut against Fulham, was sent off for a lunge on Kenny Tete.
Denis Zakaria’s quad injury added to the long list of Chelsea players who couldn’t play, which was another setback for Potter.
As Chelsea looks to turn around their recent performance, the Blues manager will be hoping Mudryk can get started right away.
Mudryk has played 23 times for Shakhtar during the last two Ukrainian Premier League seasons, contributing to 13 goals and nine goals scored.
Mikel Arteta’s team will keep trying to win the title, but Arsenal will have to shift their attention to other goals.
