Chadian Leader Mahamat Idriss Déby Promoted to Marshal Rank
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby receives the prestigious Marshal rank, solidifying his authority and military leadership in the region.
In a council primarily dominated by the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), 160 members voted in favor of adopting the resolution, 2 opposed it, and 6 abstained.
This promotion now places Mahamat at the same rank as his late father, Idriss Déby Itno, who served as the President of Chad.
In Chad, leaders are often granted the rank of marshal when they achieve significant victories in combating insurgency.
In 2020, his father Idriss Déby Itno was posthumously given the rank of marshal following a successful campaign he led against Boko Haram in the Lake Chad area.
Idriss Déby, an experienced military commander, led Chad for three decades until his death in combat against rebels in 2021.
His son, who was a general at the time, took power with support from a junta that proclaimed him “president of the CNT” and later “president of the transition,” effectively establishing him as head of state.
He subsequently revised the Constitution and gained legitimacy following a disputed election held in May.
