Catholic Bishops have urged the Nigerian Government to take immediate action to address rising food prices and alleviate growing hardship. Discover their plea.
In an appeal, the CBCN urged the Federal Government to tackle the escalating food costs and challenges facing Nigerian citizens.
At the close of their week-long second Plenary Meeting held in Auchi Diocese, Edo State, the bishops released a communique calling on the federal government to provide subsidies, soft loans and modern technology while improving seedlings for farmers. They stressed that such measures should also cater to SMEs.
The clergy states that Nigerians are currently suffering due to the increased electricity tariffs, expensive petroleum products, transportation and healthcare costs. Furthermore, they lack basic infrastructure in their daily lives. Consequently, they demand a significant change of ideology from politicians who exploit power for self-gain towards politics as an act of service and support for citizens’.
In anticipation of the Jubilee Year of Hope in 2025, which marks a special milestone for Catholics worldwide, the bishops have designated 2024 as the Year of Prayer. In their declaration, they highlighted that prayer should be complemented by tangible steps towards making amends and seeking forgiveness at individual and communal levels. Additionally, leaders across all spheres must commit to repentance in order to pave way for genuine national transformation during this sacred period.

The bishops have expressed their profound concern about the growing deviations during worship, including prolonged celebrations, excessive monetary contributions, lack of serenity and decorum, and changes made to sacramental terms and components. They also called for heightened vigilance to ensure that liturgical practices are in line with approved standards.
The CBCN chided the governments to resolve the root causes of protests and free imprisoned activists. They expressed disapproval towards violent actions by certain demonstrators and condemned security forces for taking civilian lives, while reiterating everyone’s constitutional right to peaceful protest. Additionally, they urged policymakers to modify their economic reform agenda in order alleviate public hardship and encourage development that prioritizes individual wellbeing.
Additionally, the organization urged governments to synchronize taxes and combat multiple taxation in order to prevent business collapse while also promoting investor encouragement. They further recommended that all citizens participate sincerely in prayer and fasting for Nigeria during this ongoing Year of Prayer, with a commitment towards protecting Nigeria under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its queen.
