Canadian Arrested for Drug Trafficking at Lagos Airport, Says She Was Promised $10,000

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the arrest of a 41-year-old Canadian woman named Adrienne Munju. She was apprehended by NDLEA operatives at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), in Ikeja, Lagos for allegedly importing a large shipment of “Canadian Loud,” a potent form of synthetic cannabis.

The NDLEA reported that the suspect was apprehended on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, during passenger clearance for a KLM airline flight arriving from Canada at Terminal 1 of Lagos Airport.

Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, announced this information in a statement on Sunday.

Babafemi stated that during a joint examination of Adrienne’s three bags, 74 parcels of an illicit substance weighing 35.20 kilograms were discovered in two out of her three bags. This was Adrienne’s first visit to Nigeria.

In her statement, the suspect asserted that she had been hired via an online platform to transport the consignment for 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery in Lagos.

Adrienne mentioned that she accepted the offer because she needed financial support for her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada.

Similarly, the NDLEA reported that its officers at Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers state have seized 13,298,000 opioid pills. These include Tramadol varieties such as Tramaking Quick Action and Tamol-X, along with Royal Tapentadol and Carisoprodol pills. Additionally, they intercepted 338,253 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup. The total street value of these items is over N9 billion.

The anti-narcotic agency reported the recovery of opioids from three containers originating in India. This operation, conducted by the NDLEA along with Nigerian Customs officials and other port stakeholders, took place during a thorough examination of the cargo on Wednesday and Thursday, October 2nd and 3rd, 2024.

In a similar incident, on Thursday, October 3rd, NDLEA officers at the Tincan seaport in Lagos announced they had intercepted 100 parcels of Canadian Loud with a total weight of 50 kg.

According to the statement, “the shipment was divided into 20 parcels, each placed in five large bags hidden within a container alongside four imported vehicles from Canada.”

“Although the container had been previously cleared from the ESS Libra Bonded Terminal in Ikorodu, credible intelligence allowed NDLEA operatives to track it down to a warehouse in Ikorodu. There, they discovered unlawful consignments hidden inside one of the imported vehicles—a Toyota Sienna bus. A suspect named Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim has already been detained regarding this seizure,” Babafemi stated.

In Taraba on Thursday, October 3rd, NDLEA officers intercepted a commercial bus with the license plate JAL 198 YQ traveling from Onitsha in Anambra state to Jalingo. During their search of the vehicle, they discovered significant quantities of opioids—including tramadol, rohypnol, and codeine-based syrup—hidden within its body compartments. As a result, two suspects named Pako Thomas and Emmanuel Anyigor were taken into custody. Additionally, another suspect named Chibuzor Okafor was apprehended in Wukari on Wednesday October 2nd for concealing 80 blocks of cannabis weighing 38kg inside bags of garri.

In Lagos, a suspect named Bolanle Ajenifuja was arrested on Friday, October 4th in the Afo-Media area of Ojo. During this operation, authorities recovered 700 liters of “skuchies,” which is a blend of local chapman and various illicit drugs. On the same day, three other suspects—Ezekiel Akpele, Elijah Michael, and Goddard John—were apprehended when NDLEA operatives raided two cannabis farms located at Bridge Camp, which lies between Edo and Ondo states. The raid resulted in the destruction of approximately 9.97 metric tons (kg) of cannabis spread over more than three hectares while additionally recovering 48 kg of processed psychoactive substance.

In response to the development, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, praised the officers and personnel from MMIA, Tincan, PHPC, as well as those in Lagos, Edo, and Taraba Commands for their successful arrests and seizures.
