Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, has recently announced a new strategy to reduce the intake of temporary foreign workers in the country.

This marks a significant departure from Canada’s previous approach to immigration, which was more open and expansive.

During a briefing, Miller highlighted the fact that Canada has seen a notable increase in the number of temporary residents in recent years.

While acknowledging the importance of temporary foreign workers in addressing labor shortages, Miller emphasized the need for improvements to make the system more efficient.

As part of this strategy, the Federal Government plans to adjust the number of temporary residents so that they make up no more than five percent of the national population over the next three years.

This represents a notable decrease from the current figure of 6.2 percent, which equates to around 2.5 million individuals.

The decision to make this adjustment comes as Canada has experienced significant population growth, largely driven by high levels of immigration, which has started to outpace job creation.

This surge in temporary residents includes international students, foreign workers filling employment gaps, and individuals who have been displaced by conflicts and natural disasters.
